If you are self-isolating and need help with anything like shopping, urgent supplies, posting mail, then myself, Nic, and my team will help if we can.

If in the event we have to close during this period due to Coronavirus and the village is in shut down mode, we shall be opening the kitchen lunch and dinner service, 7 days a week, to supply food and deliver it in and around the village.

We shall not charge for this service, only for the food and it will be a limited menu of good home cooked meals.

NEWS FROM YE OLDE GLOBE

WOW! We have been overwhelmed by the support from the village since we took over the lease of Ye Olde Globe in September, following the sale of the property by Enterprise Inns.

To put the record straight, although Nic wanted to buy the pub outright, he was continually outbid at the auction by David McCabe of Plymouth, who owns a chain of 22 pubs. While he owns the property here in Berrynarbor, we own the Ye Olde Globe business, and are the tenanted Licensees.

A special big THANK YOU to all those who have taken part in the painting parties over successive weekends, transforming and brightening up both the interior and exterior of the pub. Gone are the dark nicotine-orange coloured walls and off-white ceilings, while outside it has been brought into line with the black-and-white theme of the central village. This is the first stage in our refurbishment programme that will eventually also include new soft furnishings

Now a Free House, we are able to offer a selection of regular and guest beers, as well as good quality wines and other liquid refreshments. On the food side, we have two new resident chefs - Stuart [formerly of the Sawmill] and Peter - who have introduced a new menu and offer a range of imaginative specials, including the Christmas menu. They are also planning future themed menu evenings; the first, a Curry Night, precedes the distribution of this Newsletter. While on the subject of food, the pub will be open on Christmas Day, but we are sorry that all Christmas lunch tables have been reserved already.

Weekly Sunday Night Quizzes have returned, as will the Boxing Day Quiz - don't forget to reserve your table. There will be a New Year's Eve Party with free buffet for those in fancy dress. Your favourite fancy dress is the theme, so come along wearing whatever you feel comfortable in.

For the future, we shall be arranging live music evenings and other events going forward into the New Year.

Whether a regular, past customer or a newcomer to the village, we, along with all our team, Becky [Bex], Emma, Mia and Poppy behind the bar, Stuart and Peter in the kitchen and those behind the scenes, look forward to welcoming you to the 'NEW' Ye Olde Globe!

We should like to thank all those who have supported us at the Globe over the last 16 years. It is time for a change/retirement, so we bid you all farewell and wish Will and Zena, and the new team, all the best for their future at Ye Olde Globe.

Here are our events for the Christmas period:

• Regular weekly Quiz Nights: Sunday 3rd and 10th December. Arrive 8.00 p.m. for 8.30 p.m. start.
• CHRISTMAS QUIZ: Sunday 17th December. Please book your table in advance as it gets very full. Slightly earlier start so arrive 7.30 p.m. for an 8.00 p.m. start. There will be a music round, tasting round, lots of Christmassy questions and a Christmas Picture round PLUS bonus points for your team if Everyone in the team is wearing something festive.
• End of Year Quiz: Boxing Day, arrive 7.30 for 8.00 p.m. start. Lots of questions on events that occurred during 2017. Booking is strongly advised again as its usually fully booked.
• Our Fabulous Fun Music Nights: Saturday 9th December with Such & Vincent playing in the bar from 9.00 p.m. Friday 15th December with Wayne Green returning for the annual Christmas Sing-a-long. It is also National Christmas Jumper Day so there's a prize for Best Christmas Jumper and have a go at winning our Annual Cream Cracker Eating Contest.
• Our Christmas Draw Tickets are now on sale and the prizes will be drawn on Christmas Eve following the Church Service.
• On Christmas Day the bar will be open from 11.30 a.m. - 2/2.30 p.m. Looking for something to do between Christmas and New Year? Then join us on Thursday 28th December for our fun Games Night. Please put your names down in advance.
• . . . and the theme for this year's New Year's Eve Party is The Wild West. The party starts at 8.00 p.m. There'll be games and activities with a Wild West Theme in the Function Room with Music, and Dancing and a bit of Karaoke in the bar. The buffet is 'on us' as a thank you for your custom throughout the year. Please just let us know how many are in your party so that we can make sure we cater for enough.

Coming Events:

• During National Curry Week, we'll be running our Curry and Drink for £10 offer every night: So, that's from Sunday 8th - Saturday 14th October [inc.]. But.don't forget, the Curry and Drink for £10 is EVERY FrIday- Eat In or Take Away.
• We shall be decorating for Hallowe'en, so please pop in for some sweets if you are trick or treating.  Free squash for the kids, too, to keep them refreshed on their walk!
• Our All You Can Eat Nights are on Saturdays 28th October and 25th November, look out for details nearer the time.

• Friday, 7th: Quiz Night. Emlyn Pearce is running the Marathon in aid of The Calvert Trust and is holding a quiz here to help raise money for the Trust. Tickets available . . . unless sold out by the time this goes to print.
• Wednesday, 12th: GAMES NIGHT - Pool, Skittles and Darts. It's just for fun but a great way to meet new people. Please put your names down at the bar or e-mail me so that numbers are known. Arrive at 7'ish to start at 7.30 p.m.

• Saturday, 6th: Murder Mystery Night with nibbles. £8 per person, tables of 8. Please be sure to book soon as there will only be 3 tables as it involves each guest playing the part of a character. When you book, you will be given information about your character to help you plan your outfit for the evening. On arrival, you will be given your script. The evening is to raise money for Macmillan, who are providing the kit. So, gather some friends and get in touch to book your table.
• Saturday, 13th May: Eurovision Night. A sweepstake will run before the night and you are encouraged to come along in your sweepstake country's colours to show your support.

All You Can Eat Nights - There will not be one in May, but June and July will be Spanish and Greek respectively - Menus to follow

Friendship Lunches

Would you like to meet up with others from the village for lunch and a chat? The Friendship Group meet for lunch here on the last Wednesday of each month, 12.00 /12.15 p.m. All welcome. Please contact me if you would like more information or just come along to the next lunch on Wednesday, 26th April.

• Christmas Eve - Our Christmas Draw takes place after the Service in the Church at approximately 10.30 p.m.
• Christmas Day - Bar Open 11.30 a.m. to 2.00 p.m.

• Thursday 29th - Games Night - Killer Pool, Skittles and Darts. Put your names down at the Bar.

NEWS FROM YE OLDE GLOBE

Throughout August we continue to be open all day, serving Breakfast, including our MEGA Breakfast, 9.30 a.m. to noon, Monday to Saturday. Our pubfood menu/cream teas are available all day, every day.

Following the success and lovely feedback after our Garden Party at the start of July, we have another afternoon of entertainment lined up for you in the Garden [weather permitting] on Friday, 5th August. Rakes Adrift will be playing 5.30-7.30 p.m. and then our regular Friday Night Music at 9.00 p.m. will be in the bar as usual.

So pop in soon whether for a pint or a coffee, a panini or a meal. We look forward to seeing you.

On Thursday, 25th August, the Red Petticoats will be dancing outside at 7.30 p.m.

NEWS FROM THE GLOBE

We have just changed our menu here at The Globe: the evening menu has been spiced up a bit and our lunch menu will soon be available all day. We are now serving food until 10.00 p.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. Food is served all afternoon on Saturdays and Sundays and during the Summer Holidays we shall be serving food from 12.00 noon until 10.00 p.m. with take-aways from 6.00 to 10.00 p.m.

Our Carvery is available 12.00 noon to 3.00 p.m. every Sunday with a choice of 2 meats, all the trimmings and plenty of delicious vegetables.

Our All You Can Eat Night for June is German, on Saturday 25th and then on Saturday 23rd July it's South African.

We have a variety of live music planned for the coming months including The Swingboat Duo [Jazz] on 18th June and The Umberleigh Bovver Boys [Skiffle] Friday 8th July plus Della & James, Old No7, Doubtful Origin and more . . . keep an eye on boards for dates and further music night details.

... and due to the popularity of the Curry & Drink for £10 nights during April, we have decided to carry this on Every Friday Night.

Children's entertainment is yet to be confirmed so check the boards soon, or look out for an e-mail if you're on the database.

NEWS FROM THE GLOBE

I'm sure that most of you are aware, but for those who aren't, we have sold the Sawmill.

It was sad to say goodbye to the place as we had been there for almost 28 years, but we are excited for the future now that we just have The Globe to focus on.

The new owners are local business people and I am sure that they will introduce themselves to you through the newsletter. We hope they enjoy the Sawmill as much as we have over the last 27+ years.

We have a great team here to welcome you at The Globe, if you haven't been in for a while, pop in to say hello.

There are some great ideas of things to do coming up; one of which is to have regular Friday BBQ & Garden Parties. These will start on 3rd June, every Friday throughout the summer [weather permitting] we shall have live acoustic music outside with BBQ from 5.00 p.m. Look out for more details.

We shall also be serving food later until 10,00 p.m. and the Carvery will be available longer on a Sunday afternoon.

During the summer we shall also have Children's entertainment and regular Live Music in the bar.

Events for April & May include:

• Saturday 2nd: Open Mic - in the function room. The last one was a lovely evening with some great musicians. The emphasis is on "No Covers" and rather than being loud/fast music it is a very pleasant evening listening to some lovely music in a quiet, relaxing, candle-lit environment.
• Saturday, 23rd Our April "All You Can Eat Night" falls on St George's Day, so it was obvious that to celebrate this our theme must be ENGLISH. Booking Advised.
• Saturday 7th May We have a Jazz Workshop in the function room. More information will be available soon for booking a place.
• Saturday 21st May All You Can Eat' Night - Menu available by the time this newsletter is circulated.

Look out for information about Live Music on Bank Holiday weekends.

We shall be Open All Afternoon on Saturdays and Sundays from Easter, with longer opening hours to follow in May.

Our new menu will be available soon after Easter, so pop in and check it out. We are also still doing take-aways, so if you don't fancy driving in to town just 'phone us and pop in to collect your take-away. Available 6.00-9.00 p.m. The menu includes Curries, Lasagne, Burgers, Scampi, Pumpkin Tagine and more. We also do take-aways on our Theme Nights AND for Sunday Carvery.

NEWS FROM THE GLOBE

We hope you have all had a good start to 2016. We had lots going on over Christmas and New Year, it was nice to see so many of you at various events. The New Year's Eve party saw lots of you dressed as Kings and Queens - we had Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, Roger Taylor [Queen's drummer], Queen Elsa, the girls from the corridor in The Shining [Stephen King), the Goblin King from Labyrinth and lots more! Well done all who dressed up and thank you to all who came and made it a super night.

So, coming up in February here at The Globe we have a Rock 'n' Roll Night with music from The Jukes on Saturday 6th February. Table reservation is advised, especially if you wish to eat before the music starts.

Our Valentine Menu will be available for the week-end of 13th and 14th, Again, booking is advised.

The February All You Can Eat Night is on the 27th. I shall list the themes for this year shortly but generally there's a different theme at the end of each month [except August and December].

Early booking is advised for Mothering Sunday on the 6th March.

Plus, don't forget we do Take-Aways available every evening 6.00-9.00 p.m. and you can even get a Take-away Sunday Roast from 12.00-2.00 p.m.

Friday, 2nd October - Games Night. You will be split into 6 teams on the night to compete killer style at pool, skittles and darts. Everyone welcome. You do not have to be part of a team as we shall put you with a team on the night. This is a great social event and a lovely way to meet new people, especially if you are fairly new to the village.

NEWS FROM THE GLOBE AND SAWMILL INN

Friday and Saturday, 19th and 20th June is the annual BEER FESTIVAL at the Sawmill Inn. This popular event takes place on the Friday night and then the Saturday afternoon and evening. There are lots of ales to try, some great live music, stalls and a bouncy castle. During the Saturday afternoon, Mickey and Minnie Mouse - straight from Disneyland - will be calling in to see the children, so do bring them along.

Father's Day follows on the Sunday, 21st, so book early for your Roast Carvery Lunch.

During July and August, the school holidays, Captain Coconut will be returning to The Globe on Monday evenings. The show starts at 7.15 p.m. and is great fun for the kids and there is no charge.

The Globe is open every day from 9.30 a.m. Why not drop in and have a cooked breakfast?

Throughout April we shall be open on Saturdays and Sundays all day: 9.30 a.m. - 11.30 p.m. Then from 1st May we shall be open all day every day. Breakfasts are available during the morning but you don't have to eat, you could just pop in for a morning cuppa.

• Saturday 18th April: 40s Night with Tuxedo Function A 6 piece band with our village's very own Gary Songhurst, playing covers of Glenn Miller, The Andrews Sisters and more. Dress up and come along for a sing song or a dance.

Now that we have the Carvery Unit set up and the Back Room is more of a Dining Room we have started our Monthly All You Can Eat Nights [with the exception of August and December].

• Saturday, 28th February: Tex-Mex
• Saturday. 21st March: Italian

There will be a selection of hot starters and main meals for you to help yourself to - As Many Times As You Want!

All this for just £16 per person with an early booking incentive: Pay just£14 if you book the Tex-Mex by Tuesday 17th Feb and the Italian by Tuesday 10th March. A further £2 discount if you are a Loyalty Card Holder.

• Saturday 14th February: Valentine's Day So book early for a candle-lit table and treat your loved one to a delicious meal with some extra touches to make sure your night is special.
• Saturday 14th March: Games Night Teams compete at Killer games of pool, skittles and darts. Put your names down at the bar in advance.
• Sunday 15th March: Mothering Sunday Be sure to book a table early for this one so that you don't miss out on our Carvery.

... and remember; the Carvery is served every Sunday from 12.00 noon to 2.00 p.m. £9.50 per person, which includes soup and crusty bread starter. Kid's portions are just £4.95 and include squash, ice-cream AND an activity bag!

Quiz Nights continue to run fort-nightly and on the alternate Sundays we are starting Board Games Night - Monopoly, Pictionary, etc., and Card Games Night - Bridge, Rummy, Cribbage, etc. So the next Card Night is Sunday, 8th February and the next Board Games Night is Sunday, 22nd February No need to book, just turn up 7.30 p.m. for 8.00 p.m. start.

The Globe is now OPEN ALL DAY, so whether you fancy a morning coffee and a piece of cake whilst you read the paper, or a hearty breakfast and a chance to natter as the kids play in the soft play area, or maybe a late lunch with friends . . . we are here to serve you from 9.00 a.m. daily [alcohol available from 10.00 a.m. Monday to Saturday, 11.00 a.m. on Sundays. Food will be available every day from 9.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m.

Our Take Away Menu has taken off very well. Call in and collect a menu or view it on our website or facebook page. Telephone orders welcomed.

Easter Week-end at The Globe: Live music on Saturday 19th April from 9.00 p.m. and Quiz on Sunday, 20th from 9.00 p.m.

The Sawmill Duck Race will take place on Sunday, 4th May with live music and stalls in the Beer Garden before and after the race. Look out for posters.

The music will start at approximately 7.30 p.m. Friday and the line-up is: Wayne Green, Zamba and to finish off the night The ElderBerries [a combination of musicians from the Knowleberries and the Elderly Brothers]

NEWS FROM YE OLD GLOBE

A big THANK YOU to all who came to the many events over Christmas and New Year - it was lovely to see so many from the village. It was a very busy couple of weeks...BUT... remember, we're here all year round and it would be great to see the 'occasional' locals join our regulars more often.

More than £500 was raised for charity over the holiday period: the carols in the square followed by the reindeer drive in the pub, raised over £300 for the "Singing for the Brain" charity in Ilfracombe and the Air Ambulance; the Boxing Night Quiz raised £65 from the raffle and then the Winners donated their £42 prize money, making a total of £107 for the Toddler Group; while the New Year's Eve Raffle (organised by Ray Davey) raised in the region of £100 for the R.N.L.I.

Well done Berrynarbor... and that's excluding the Christmas card distribution, the PTA Christmas Fayre and the many, many other fundraising events that take place throughout the year. You ALL should be PROUD to be part of such an amazing community. I know I am! We live in a wonderful village with a thriving community, one of a dying breed that still retains a church, school, village shop, a community centre (Manor Hall) and, yes, the pub. These are the things that so many people look for when choosing where to live and they have a positive effect on house prices. To lose any one of them through lack of support would be tragic and often has a knock-on effect on the others.

To ensure the pub remains part of the community we introduced our Loyalty Card scheme - it's our way of saying 'Thank You' to the regulars and helping to make it more affordable to visit the pub more often. It has proved to be a great success and whilst we were changing the offer monthly we have now decided to stick to "10% off food and drink" when you show your card.

So, if you're not a regular and haven't got a card yet then fill in a form at the bar and start enjoying the benefits! Why not suggest to a few friends..."hey, let's go to the pub this weekend"....or "do you fancy having a go at the quiz (it's just for fun so we've nothing to lose)", or "let's take the kids to run around in the play area while we catch up over a drink or a coffee"?

While we are privileged to run the Globe, it is YOUR pub, so if there are reasons why you don't come along, or don't come that often, please let me know how or what you would like to see change? I really am interested in your feedback. There will be a box on the bar for your comments, which can be anonymous if you like!

Party Music will be playing in the backroom and the bar all night from 8.00 p.m. to 1.00 a.m. There is no entry fee so if you want to just come along for the beer, atmosphere and music then just come along at any time, but those wanting to eat at 8.30 p.m. should purchase tickets in advance.

St. George's Themed Craft Afternoon at the Globe - Monday, 23rd April, 3.20-5.00 p.m. For kids aged 5-11 years, £4.00 per child or £7.00 for two. Kids get to do 3 different activities and the price includes squash and a snack. • Sunday 24th April - Easter Sunday is the Duck Race. Starting from Mill Park Waterfall at 4.00 p.m. Ducks can be sponsored at Mill Park Shop, The Globe and the Sawmill. 1st prize is £50.00, 2nd prize £20 and third prize £10. Proceeds from sponsorship is for Combe Martin Music Festival. There will be live music after the race from Country Rose [the Duo].
• Friday 29th, The Royal Wedding - We hope to have some evening entertainment at The Globe to follow the afternoon celebrations at the Manor Hall. Quiz Nights at The Globe have now finished for the summer but will resume on Sunday, 5th September at 8.30 p.m.

Both pubs are now open ALL DAY from 12.00 noon, serving food from 12.00 to 9.00 p.m. The last day for All Day Opening will be on Monday, 30th August, after which our usual opening hours will be 12.00 noon to 2.30 p.m. and 6.00 to 11.00 p.m.

We are now serving a range of coffees, such as Latte, Cappuccino and Cafe Mocha, made with freshly ground coffee beans.

Coming Events:

We shall be opening all day over the Easter Week-end, serving breakfast, lunch, afternoon snacks and evening meals. Entertainment is planned for Good Friday and Easter Saturday, with a Disco and Karaoke - bar open until midnight both nights. Easter Sunday Carvery will be available at lunchtime and in the evening. Our reputation for one of the best carveries in the area is growing, so Book Early to avoid disappointment!

Following the huge success of the 70's & 80's Night, we shall hold a similar event on Saturday, 25th April. To celebrate St. George's Day, the theme will be 'Anything English', so dress up as anything from St. Trinians to Royalty, knights in shining armour, favourite pop or football star - the choice is endless! Entry, is strictly by ticket only available now at £5.00 each from The Sawmill or The Globe. Proceeds to Berrynarbor Primary School and Combe Martin Music Festival. Tickets are limited to 200, so hurry up as they will soon all be gone!

The 'All You Can Eat' Nights have again proved popular and many have asked when the next one will be. So, we are holding ONE more before the summer, on Saturday, 9th May, when it will be Chinese and just £9.95 per head, so book early.

NEWS FROM YE OLD GLOBE - 'The Pub is the Hub'

Well, if the activities we hosted in February and March are anything to go by, then Prince Charles is right when he coined the phrase 'The Pub is the Hub'! These last couple of months have been really busy with community activity and various Manor Hall groups, such as Toddlers, Spinners and Crafters using our function room during the Hall's refurbishment.

As well as the various clubs and groups who use us as their meeting ground - and thanks, it's great to see you all and you're always welcome - we raised a giggle [several in fact] and £30 for village charities with our Anne Summers Night, when the back room became a girls only domain, closely followed by a Valentine's Night, totally unconnected of course! The Friendship Group had their belated Christmas Lunch and will, by the time you read this, have met here again for their monthly lunch. We hosted the Bell Ringers and their buddies from Combe Martin, a Christening buffet, the Combe Martin Ladies Darts Singles Competition, the list goes on ...

The community really came together for the wonderful 'Sing-a-long Folk Night', organised by Tony Summers to raise money for the church bells. It was a great night with a lovely village atmosphere, and everyone is asking "When is the next one?"

Two new faces have joined our team. Many of you have already met Steve, our new Head Chef, who has transferred permanently from The Sawmill. Steve, back from his recent holiday and raring to go, uses fresh herbs and local Devon produce to get your taste buds dancing. So, for those of you who have not sampled his delicious food, now's your chance. We take this opportunity to introduce Sean, who will be working at both the pubs. He has been covering at The Globe whilst Steve was away and will stand in for him on his days off. He and his partner Sam and daughter Isabelle have moved to Berrynarbor and we are delighted to have him as part of our team.

Easter and May Bank Holiday week-ends are fast approaching. Quiz Nights will continue after Easter, on 26th April and 10th May after which they will be confirmed.

Although busy times are ahead with the tourist season fast approaching, we look forward to welcoming both old and new customers alike - whether it's for a meeting, a social gathering or just a quiet drink or dinner at your 'local'. We are one of the luckier villages these days with a real community pub and a wonderful new community shop. As they say, "Use Them or Lose Them"!

NEWS FROM THE GLOBE AND THE SAWMILL INN

We have various events planned for February and March which I have listed below, but first of all, looking back at the Christmas and New Year period, we've had some really good nights.

Christmas Eve is always a great night in The Globe - there's a lovely atmosphere and it's great to see people come back to the village to visit family. The 1st Prize in the Draw [£50] went to Michael Bowden and on his birthday too! Well done, Mitch.

Boxing Night always pulls in a good crowd for the End of Year Quiz. The Walls/Fanner team won the money which they very kindly donated to the raffle prize money that we collect every quiz night, this will be shared out in June.

There was a good turnout for the Games Night between Christmas and the New Year, with 40 people competing at 'Killer', Pool, Darts and Skittles - no amazing prizes to be won, it was just for fun and I think from the feedback that those who took part definitely had fun! Hopefully I can arrange another Games Night before the summer.

... and, of course, New Year's Eve! I personally had the best New Year's Eve Night that I've had for many years. There were T Birds and Pink Ladies, Teddy Boys, loads of polka dots, stylish sunglasses . . . and more.

Dan Wassall, Wayne Green and Phil Horton were excellent - as a band named 'Tommy Tornado and the Twisters' they had got together purely for the purpose of playing The Globe on New Year's Eve, although they should definitely play together more often! Thanks guys, you were fantastic. Dan, Wayne and Phil would like to thank everyone at The Globe for the excellent reception they received.

The dancing in the bar continued until a little after 2.00 a.m. with rock 'n' roll [and more] - I seem to remember Cotton Eye Joe playing at some point - pumping out of the big speakers that the band had used earlier.

And so to 2009. We have already had an "All You Can Eat" Curry Night at The Globe which went very well and by the time this is published, we shall also have had our 'Team' Dinner at the Sawmill, "All You Can Eat" Chinese at the Sawmill, which is already half booked and, of course, the 60's/70's/80's Disco [for the North Devon Hospice] on the 31st January, for which I have had to order more tickets as the first 150 have already sold.

So what's next ... ?

Well, the Quiz Nights will continue and maybe [depending on feedback] we might hold the quiz weekly - to be confirmed. Of course Valentine's Day and Mothering Sunday [22nd March] are just around the corner, so don't leave it too late to book your table.

Other events include ...

An Ann Summers Party in the 'back' room at The Globe on Friday, 6th February. Sorry, men are not allowed but we can pass a catalogue into the bar for you to place orders! Items ordered will arrive on the 11th in time for Valentine's Day!! All ladies 18 years and over are invited, so come along and have some fun.

Then on 13th March, yes that's Friday 13th March, we'll have a Spooky Friday 13th Karaoke Night in the bar at The Globe - dress up as something scary and join us at 9.30 p.m.

And finally, the "All You Can Eat" for £9.95 Nights for February and March are:

• Saturday, 7th March at the Sawmill - Mexican

I should like to thank everyone who sponsored me to do 'Nightwalk' when I raised £111.00. It was a good night and Helen and I [from the Sawmill] set off from Bideford Rugby Club around 8.15 p.m. and were led across the old bridge to join the Tarka Trail to Barnstaple. At Freminghton we were offered soup, but with only 3.5 miles to go, we opted to just get it over with, so accepted the 'Twilight' chocolate and carried on! We reached Barnstaple Rugby Club just before 11 o'clock, and just before the rain started - oh so glad we set off early! Luckily we didn't suffer too much the next day and I only got one blister - not too bad really. Many thanks for the sponsor money.

The bands that we had in July as part of the Combe Martin Music Festival were a great success and we will definitely be taking part again next year. Thank you to those who came to support these nights.

We are open for Breakfast at the Sawmill, 9.00 a.m. to 12 noon on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays throughout the school holidays. The Sawmill is also open every day from 12 noon until 11.00 p.m., serving food daily from 12 noon to 9.00 p.m. throughout the holidays.

NEWS FROM THE SAWMILL INN & THE GLOBE

From Whitsun Bank Holiday, both pubs will be open from 6.00 p.m. every evening [until September]. The Sawmill is open all day on Saturdays and Sundays now and during the summer holidays, every day. At the Sawmill we'll be open for Breakfast on select days of the week throughout July and August. We shall be serving Hot Buffet from the Carvery Counter every Friday night and our popular Carvery will now be available on Sunday evening as well as lunchtime.

Weather permitting, we'll have BBQs on the 30th May and more BBQ nights will follow - watch the 'A' boards on the roadside for details. The Sawmill is participating in Combe Martin Music Festival this year, so come along for Live Music on:

The Sawmill is open all day [from 12.00 noon] every day through August, serving food from 12.00 noon to 9.00 p.m. Take-away meals battered cod, chips, burgers, etc.

We should like to welcome Terry Coates to The Globe. Terry started on the 1st July as Head Chef, replacing Karl who is now Head Chef at The Sawmill. Terry has already been creating a new range of delicious homemade specials and will continue with more throughout the summer. During the winter we shall operate the Dining Room as a separate restaurant with a different menu to the bar area. The Restaurant will open on Friday, 15th September, and will be open Wednesday to Saturday nights [inclusive] and will be Booking Only.

The 'All You Can Eat' nights will resume for the winter at The Sawmill at £9.00 a head.

The next one after this Newsletter is circulated, will be Sunday, 16th October, Each week a raffle is held to raise money for either Berry in Bloom, the Carnival Float, Berrynarbor Pre-School, Sunday School or the Kids' Christmas Party. Your support is appreciated.

NEWS FROM THE GLOBE & SAWMILL INN

We have decided to do some more Quiz Nights after Easter, starting at 8.30 p.m. they will be on Sundays 10th and 24th April, 8th and 22nd May. The one on the 10th April will be slightly different - the entry fee will be a £1 and all the money received will go towards Berry in Bloom.

Held in the Family Room, we already have a crowd of 'regular' teams, but if anyone who hasn't been to the Globe Quiz Night would like to come along, you would be very welcome, either as a team of your own or join with someone else on the night. It is a very friendly atmosphere and we don't take things too seriously, so come along and join

The Sawmill Inn is open at lunchtimes again and both pubs will be opening from 6.00 p.m. starting on Friday, 27th May.

And finally . . . to alleviate any panic due to media hype, pubs are NOT allowed to open 24 hours - we have to make an application to vary our licence if we want to open later than 11.00 p.m. However, we shall not be applying for 24 hour opening, we really haven't got the energy to stay open all night, so don't worry, not much is going to change at The Globe & Sawmill Inn when the new Licensing Laws come into force [expected to be November].

New Year's Eve at The Globe was a good night with a lovely atmosphere - hopefully all agree. If you'd like to give us any feedback, please do - it's your pub too so we want you to get the most out of it.

• Saturday, 5th: Chinese Night at the Sawmill. All you can eat for £9.00. This is probably going to be the last theme night until October. Booking advised.

So the sumrner - if you can call it that! is over, Back to a bit of normality. The shops are now stocking Halloween goodies, and some are even providing us with the opportunity to buy Christmas Cards!

Our Christmas details will be available in the December issue, but we do have our Christmas menu now, as people start looking in September. The price is held at the same as last year just £9.95 for 3-course and coffee, available from the 1st to 24th December, inclusive. However, there are other things to tell you about for October and November:

• Sunday, 3rd October: Start of the fortnightly Quiz at The Globe, arrive between 8.00 and 8.30 p.m.
• Saturday, 30th October: "All You Can Eat" Chinese Night at The Sawrnill. Early booking is advised at £8.00 per person - the seats fill fast.
• Sunday 31st October: Halloween Quiz at The Globe. Prize for best fancy dress in Quiz. Children are invited to "Trick or Treat" -a tub of sweets will be kept at the bar.
• Friday, 5th November: After Fireworks and Bonfire at Derek's [please put contributions in the tin on the bar before the night], we invite you to warm up in the family room at The Globe with complimentary jacket potato [in foil!] and a cup of hot soup.
• Saturday, 13th November: "All You Can Eat" again for £8.00 per person. Curry Night at the Sawmill. Book early to avoid disappointment.
• Saturday, 27th November: "All You Can Eat" Chinese Night at The Sawmill, £8.00 per person. Again, early booking is advised. This will be the last theme "All You Can Eat" nights until January.

THE OLD SAWMILL INN & YE OLDE GLOBE

Menus at both pubs will be changing before Easter. At The Globe, we are now doing two courses for £5.95 on Sundays at lunchtime [main course and sweet], and at the Sawmill the Carvery on Sunday, at £6.25, will continue to include a free sweet until just before the main season. The Sawmill '2 for 1' and 'All You Can Eat' nights have now finished until the autumn. Quiz nights at The Globe have also come to an end, but will start again in October.

Thank you to those who responded with suggestions when a notice was put up asking for ideas. We are looking into some of them and will display boards/posters to keep you informed. These include a Folk Sing-a-Long Evening, Seniors' Whist and Tea, and Mum and Toddler Mornings in school holidays.
