FROM THE GLOBE

I'd like to write individually to all of you who have supported The Globe since this pandemic began, but it would cut into precious time needed to run this valuable village asset.Last year and this have been unprecedented times, as no public house, in living memory, has had to deal with lockdowns, meaning numerous months of closure, and restrictions that include social distancing, which necessitates fewer tables, essential booking and unfortunate and unavoidable delays.

Sadly, my staff, as with thousands of others up and down the country, have enduredimpatience, rudeness and intolerance from visiting holidaymakers. Members of staff can only serve one table at a time and running is not an option! The hospitality industry has been stretched and pushed to almost breaking point, nationwide. Many pubs have closed, some may become residential homes and, therefore, the closure is a permanent loss to a village.

'Spread booking' has been another issue: several places are booked for a meal; one is chosen, but the other venues are not cancelled, and, therefore, businesses, including ours, suffer with financial loss: if a table is reserved, we do not double-book it as a 'just in-case'.

Drinking, choosing to eat at a later hour, then accusing the landlord or owner that they have waited hours for their meal and then see fit to walk away without paying, has occurred at The Globe, also, but only once, thankfully. It won't happen again!

On a cheerful note, we have received so many compliments about the food, staff, garden and the pub itself; people have been pleased to see and eat in a 'traditional English country pub'.It has been at the heart of this village for centuries. To see the pub busy is satisfying; it has been worth the fight.I have fought and appreciate greatly the local support and help to keep it open and want The Globe to continue as a traditional English country pub for many more years.

NEWS FROM YE OLDE GLOBE

WOW! We have been overwhelmed by the support from the village since we took over the lease of Ye Olde Globe in September, following the sale of the property by Enterprise Inns.

To put the record straight, although Nic wanted to buy the pub outright, he was continually outbid at the auction by David McCabe of Plymouth, who owns a chain of 22 pubs. While he owns the property here in Berrynarbor, we own the Ye Olde Globe business, and are the tenanted Licensees.

A special big THANK YOU to all those who have taken part in the painting parties over successive weekends, transforming and brightening up both the interior and exterior of the pub. Gone are the dark nicotine-orange coloured walls and off-white ceilings, while outside it has been brought into line with the black-and-white theme of the central village. This is the first stage in our refurbishment programme that will eventually also include new soft furnishings

Now a Free House, we are able to offer a selection of regular and guest beers, as well as good quality wines and other liquid refreshments. On the food side, we have two new resident chefs - Stuart [formerly of the Sawmill] and Peter - who have introduced a new menu and offer a range of imaginative specials, including the Christmas menu. They are also planning future themed menu evenings; the first, a Curry Night, precedes the distribution of this Newsletter. While on the subject of food, the pub will be open on Christmas Day, but we are sorry that all Christmas lunch tables have been reserved already.

Weekly Sunday Night Quizzes have returned, as will the Boxing Day Quiz - don't forget to reserve your table. There will be a New Year's Eve Party with free buffet for those in fancy dress. Your favourite fancy dress is the theme, so come along wearing whatever you feel comfortable in.

For the future, we shall be arranging live music evenings and other events going forward into the New Year.

Whether a regular, past customer or a newcomer to the village, we, along with all our team, Becky [Bex], Emma, Mia and Poppy behind the bar, Stuart and Peter in the kitchen and those behind the scenes, look forward to welcoming you to the 'NEW' Ye Olde Globe!

    NEWS FROM YE OLD GLOBE

A big THANK YOU to all who came to the many events over Christmas and New Year - it was lovely to see so many from the village. It was a very busy couple of weeks...BUT... remember, we're here all year round and it would be great to see the 'occasional' locals join our regulars more often.

More than £500 was raised for charity over the holiday period: the carols in the square followed by the reindeer drive in the pub, raised over £300 for the "Singing for the Brain" charity in Ilfracombe and the Air Ambulance; the Boxing Night Quiz raised £65 from the raffle and then the Winners donated their £42 prize money, making a total of £107 for the Toddler Group; while the New Year's Eve Raffle (organised by Ray Davey) raised in the region of £100 for the R.N.L.I.

Well done Berrynarbor... and that's excluding the Christmas card distribution, the PTA Christmas Fayre and the many, many other fundraising events that take place throughout the year. You ALL should be PROUD to be part of such an amazing community. I know I am! We live in a wonderful village with a thriving community, one of a dying breed that still retains a church, school, village shop, a community centre (Manor Hall) and, yes, the pub. These are the things that so many people look for when choosing where to live and they have a positive effect on house prices. To lose any one of them through lack of support would be tragic and often has a knock-on effect on the others.

To ensure the pub remains part of the community we introduced our Loyalty Card scheme - it's our way of saying 'Thank You' to the regulars and helping to make it more affordable to visit the pub more often. It has proved to be a great success and whilst we were changing the offer monthly we have now decided to stick to "10% off food and drink" when you show your card.

So, if you're not a regular and haven't got a card yet then fill in a form at the bar and start enjoying the benefits! Why not suggest to a few friends..."hey, let's go to the pub this weekend"....or "do you fancy having a go at the quiz (it's just for fun so we've nothing to lose)", or "let's take the kids to run around in the play area while we catch up over a drink or a coffee"?

While we are privileged to run the Globe, it is YOUR pub, so if there are reasons why you don't come along, or don't come that often, please let me know how or what you would like to see change? I really am interested in your feedback. There will be a box on the bar for your comments, which can be anonymous if you like!

We look forward to seeing you.

    Karen

NEWS FROM YE OLD GLOBE - 'The Pub is the Hub'

Well, if the activities we hosted in February and March are anything to go by, then Prince Charles is right when he coined the phrase 'The Pub is the Hub'! These last couple of months have been really busy with community activity and various Manor Hall groups, such as Toddlers, Spinners and Crafters using our function room during the Hall's refurbishment.

As well as the various clubs and groups who use us as their meeting ground - and thanks, it's great to see you all and you're always welcome - we raised a giggle [several in fact] and £30 for village charities with our Anne Summers Night, when the back room became a girls only domain, closely followed by a Valentine's Night, totally unconnected of course! The Friendship Group had their belated Christmas Lunch and will, by the time you read this, have met here again for their monthly lunch. We hosted the Bell Ringers and their buddies from Combe Martin, a Christening buffet, the Combe Martin Ladies Darts Singles Competition, the list goes on ...

The community really came together for the wonderful 'Sing-a-long Folk Night', organised by Tony Summers to raise money for the church bells. It was a great night with a lovely village atmosphere, and everyone is asking "When is the next one?"

Two new faces have joined our team. Many of you have already met Steve, our new Head Chef, who has transferred permanently from The Sawmill. Steve, back from his recent holiday and raring to go, uses fresh herbs and local Devon produce to get your taste buds dancing. So, for those of you who have not sampled his delicious food, now's your chance. We take this opportunity to introduce Sean, who will be working at both the pubs. He has been covering at The Globe whilst Steve was away and will stand in for him on his days off. He and his partner Sam and daughter Isabelle have moved to Berrynarbor and we are delighted to have him as part of our team.

Easter and May Bank Holiday week-ends are fast approaching. Quiz Nights will continue after Easter, on 26th April and 10th May after which they will be confirmed.

Although busy times are ahead with the tourist season fast approaching, we look forward to welcoming both old and new customers alike - whether it's for a meeting, a social gathering or just a quiet drink or dinner at your 'local'. We are one of the luckier villages these days with a real community pub and a wonderful new community shop. As they say, "Use Them or Lose Them"!

We look forward to welcoming you to 'The Hub' and to The Sawmill.

NEWS FROM THE GLOBE AND THE SAWMILL INN

We have various events planned for February and March which I have listed below, but first of all, looking back at the Christmas and New Year period, we've had some really good nights.

Christmas Eve is always a great night in The Globe - there's a lovely atmosphere and it's great to see people come back to the village to visit family. The 1st Prize in the Draw [£50] went to Michael Bowden and on his birthday too! Well done, Mitch.

Boxing Night always pulls in a good crowd for the End of Year Quiz. The Walls/Fanner team won the money which they very kindly donated to the raffle prize money that we collect every quiz night, this will be shared out in June.

There was a good turnout for the Games Night between Christmas and the New Year, with 40 people competing at 'Killer', Pool, Darts and Skittles - no amazing prizes to be won, it was just for fun and I think from the feedback that those who took part definitely had fun! Hopefully I can arrange another Games Night before the summer.

... and, of course, New Year's Eve! I personally had the best New Year's Eve Night that I've had for many years. There were T Birds and Pink Ladies, Teddy Boys, loads of polka dots, stylish sunglasses . . . and more.

Dan Wassall, Wayne Green and Phil Horton were excellent - as a band named 'Tommy Tornado and the Twisters' they had got together purely for the purpose of playing The Globe on New Year's Eve, although they should definitely play together more often! Thanks guys, you were fantastic. Dan, Wayne and Phil would like to thank everyone at The Globe for the excellent reception they received.

The dancing in the bar continued until a little after 2.00 a.m. with rock 'n' roll [and more] - I seem to remember Cotton Eye Joe playing at some point - pumping out of the big speakers that the band had used earlier.

And so to 2009. We have already had an "All You Can Eat" Curry Night at The Globe which went very well and by the time this is published, we shall also have had our 'Team' Dinner at the Sawmill, "All You Can Eat" Chinese at the Sawmill, which is already half booked and, of course, the 60's/70's/80's Disco [for the North Devon Hospice] on the 31st January, for which I have had to order more tickets as the first 150 have already sold.

    So what's next ... ?

Well, the Quiz Nights will continue and maybe [depending on feedback] we might hold the quiz weekly - to be confirmed. Of course Valentine's Day and Mothering Sunday [22nd March] are just around the corner, so don't leave it too late to book your table.

    Other events include ...

An Ann Summers Party in the 'back' room at The Globe on Friday, 6th February. Sorry, men are not allowed but we can pass a catalogue into the bar for you to place orders! Items ordered will arrive on the 11th in time for Valentine's Day!! All ladies 18 years and over are invited, so come along and have some fun.

Then on 13th March, yes that's Friday 13th March, we'll have a Spooky Friday 13th Karaoke Night in the bar at The Globe - dress up as something scary and join us at 9.30 p.m.

And finally, the "All You Can Eat" for £9.95 Nights for February and March are:

    • Saturday, 21at February at The Globe - Italian
    • Saturday, 7th March at the Sawmill - Mexican

Booking strongly advised for both nights.

So, hopefully we'll be seeing you all soon.

Happy New Year Everyone, from Don, Edith, Karen, Karl & Staff.

    Karen

Raffle Money from Quiz Nights: Thank you to all who support the Quiz and the raffles. We have just divided the money and have been able to give £68.50 to our Primary School, Pre-School, Berry in Bloom and the Carnival Float. A big thank you to Bet Brooks for selling tickets each Quiz Night. and finally ...

I should like to thank everyone who sponsored me to do 'Nightwalk' when I raised £111.00. It was a good night and Helen and I [from the Sawmill] set off from Bideford Rugby Club around 8.15 p.m. and were led across the old bridge to join the Tarka Trail to Barnstaple. At Freminghton we were offered soup, but with only 3.5 miles to go, we opted to just get it over with, so accepted the 'Twilight' chocolate and carried on! We reached Barnstaple Rugby Club just before 11 o'clock, and just before the rain started - oh so glad we set off early! Luckily we didn't suffer too much the next day and I only got one blister - not too bad really. Many thanks for the sponsor money.

NEWS FROM THE GLOBE & SAWMILL INN

We have decided to do some more Quiz Nights after Easter, starting at 8.30 p.m. they will be on Sundays 10th and 24th April, 8th and 22nd May. The one on the 10th April will be slightly different - the entry fee will be a £1 and all the money received will go towards Berry in Bloom.

Held in the Family Room, we already have a crowd of 'regular' teams, but if anyone who hasn't been to the Globe Quiz Night would like to come along, you would be very welcome, either as a team of your own or join with someone else on the night. It is a very friendly atmosphere and we don't take things too seriously, so come along and join

The Sawmill Inn is open at lunchtimes again and both pubs will be opening from 6.00 p.m. starting on Friday, 27th May.

And finally . . . to alleviate any panic due to media hype, pubs are NOT allowed to open 24 hours - we have to make an application to vary our licence if we want to open later than 11.00 p.m. However, we shall not be applying for 24 hour opening, we really haven't got the energy to stay open all night, so don't worry, not much is going to change at The Globe & Sawmill Inn when the new Licensing Laws come into force [expected to be November].

First of all we should like to thank everyone for their cards, flowers and support over the last few weeks. As yet we don't know when Mum [Edith] will move from Plymouth to Barnstaple, and we don't know when she will be able to come home. However, she is having physiotherapy now to get her back on her feet and moving around. She has read all of her cards and remembers everybody, and is keen to get back to Berrynarbor.

Since Karen wrote this piece for the newsletter we have had wonderful news. Edith has progressed well enough to come back to North Devon and is now in the hospital in Barnstaple. Carry on the good work, Edith!

Apologies about the pumpkins - we could only find three in the village! Has anybody got the answer on how to kill slugs? However, money raised from the sale of plants has been sent to the Children's Hospice.

The Courage quiz nights have been well attended and at this time the leaders are a team led by Roger Luckham and Deryck Brookes and their wives, with the Sam 'n' Ella team from Bessemer and Miss Muffets close behind. Good luck to whoever wins and goes forward to the regional finals.

The Children's Hospice S.W. benefited by £65 as a result of the annual Pumpkin weekend. Thank you to everyone who entered into the spirit of the event - from tiny seeds large pumpkins ... and what a whopper grew in the Luckham garden! Congratulations to William and Rachel on surpassing their last year's heavy-weight champion - this year's 'heaviest' weighed in at 114 lbs! Congratulations to them too for their delightful pumpkin pictures below. 'Pumpkin Bunkin' won Jacqui and John Weaver the Best Dressed Award and Ashley Lane successfully defended his title when for the second year his pumpkin reached the bottom of Pitt Hill first.

The inevitable rounders match followed with Phil's team suffering a crushing defeat at the bat and hands of Ann [Davies] and her team.

It was decided some months ago - over a pint or two, of course - that the theme for this year's carnival float had to be 'Farewell Hong Kong'. Phil and his team got out their saws, hammers, nails and paint brushes; Bet and Jim Brooks were seconded to create a dragon and Ann Davies volunteered to organise the costumes.

On the 13th August, on a lovely warm sunny evening, a very colourful Chinese 'junk' made its way along Combe Martin High Street, having just won 2nd in Class. A week later, In torrential rain, it took 1st in Class and Best Overall at Ilfracombe, which it repeated at Barnstaple four weeks later.

Once again a big thank you to Jill and Brian Mountain for allowing part of their bam to be used for storage and construction work; Herbert Parkin for loan of tractor; Alan and Alf for cleaning the tractor and towing the float; Richard Haines for the smoke machine; Hele Building Supplies and Lynn for feeding the team!

Everyone enjoyed being involved and it is hoped the team spirit and the fun had by all helped to raise lots of money for charity.

Carnival Club: For those who haven't worked out what this year's float was all about, it was based on the Walt Disney film TOY STORY, a battle between new and old toys for their young owners' affections. It was the Class Winner and Best Pub Float in Combe Martin and Overall Winner in Ilfracombe and Barnstaple. We hope our efforts helped to raise lots of money for charity as well as the pleasure it gave all of us to take part.

Thanks to all the kind people who helped to produce the float, to name a few - Gill and Brian Mountain for our corner of their bam, Richard Haines for the use of his motors, Hele Building Supplies for material help, Herbert and Alan Parkin for the tractor, and last but not least, Jackie Weaver for the loan of John!

Pumpkin Weekend - The now annual Pumpkin Growing and Dressing competition benefited the Children's Hospice at Fremington by more than £100 . The heaviest was a new village record, 87 lbs, grown by William Luckham of Birdswell - our youngest contestant. Well done! Olinda Holden and Ray Toms, 2nd and 3rd, weighed their pumpkins in at 54 lbs and 39 lbs. Best Dressed honours went to Jancy Davies who had put in a lot of work on a "sunflower" pumpkin. Congratulations and thanks to all who dressed pumpkins.

We have to admit that the 'residue' left all down Pitt Hill was our fault but It was all in a good cause. The Junior Race was won by Sam, with Rachel 2nd, Greg 3rd, Ben 4th, Dan 5th and Shane 6th, and if anyone has seen Christopher Adams, please send him home! Ashley, followed by Melanie and Mark were the adult race winners.

    THE GLOBE

It is now official - Gary Songhurst has the biggest one in the village! This, of course, refers to his pumpkin entered in the Children in Need competition. Although the judges, professional growers Derek Phillips and John Clarke, were unhappy about the variety grown, they agreed that at 71.75 lbs, it was the biggest. Josef Belka's two 'goodies' at 56 and 44 lbs were second, and Joy Scott [43 lbs] and Sarah Songhurst [42 lbs] were joint third.

The best dressed pumpkin was clothed by Phil and Lynne for their 'Landlord Look-alike", with Rod of Langleigh House's 'Giant Lollipop' runner up. Thanks to all who entered - there were some really good entries and Children in Need will benefit by the sum of £74.

The annual race down Pitt Hill saw Ryan Beale win the children's section, with Barry winning the adult race. His triumph was short-lived, as he was disqualified for arriving with insufficient pumpkin! So Amy Harris took the honours. Well done! The rounders match was won by a team headed by Mark Adams, who easily beat the youngsters led by Edward Bowden. But watch out, next year they want to play football as well!

Once again the float had its annual airing and the cowboys who built "Wells Fargo" were riding on it as well. Congratulations to all the team who surpassed all previous efforts by winning Best in Class and Best Float Overall in Combe Martin, Ilfracombe and Barnstaple. A special thanks to Brian and Jill Mountain for the under-cover area in which to build it, Herbert Parkin for the tractor and Nigel Mason for the brilliant artwork which brought it all to life.

OUTBACK [Gary, Nigel, Mary-Jane, Peter and Peter] who have been performing out back in the pub, together with friends and performers from Ilfracombe and Barnstaple, will in future be having regular folk/blues evenings on the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month. If there are any locals who would like to play, sing or just come and listen, they will be very welcome.

SHOWTIME is nearly here again and as last year's show was a sell-out, we shall be holding this year's extravaganza over two nights! FRIDAY AND SATURDAY, 10TH and 11TH MARCH. Tickets will be limited and on sale from approximately 14th February at £2.50, including a rum punch - so make sure to book in early for your choice of evening.

The theme this year is "MARITIME/V.E. DAY" , and to create a good atmosphere we again ask the audience to dress appropriately. Rehearsals have started on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings - see Gary for more details. Proceeds this year will be split, partly for the carnival float and hopefully to buy a couple of professional spotlights for the Manor Hall.

The Pumpkin Competition And what is the well-dressed pumpkin wearing in Berrynarbor this year? The winners of the very expertly decorated Berrynarbor specimens were: 1st Gary and Mishka [Miss Muffets] - Cinderella's Coach, 2nd Neil and Val - Hot! Hot! Hot! and 3rd Olinda - Ugly Duckling. The heaviest, weighing in at 461bs, was entered by Joy [Bet Brooks's sister], with Josef's 281b'er in 2nd place and Ken and Jenny's entry 3rd, at 18.5 lbs. Sally Johnston guessed the weight of the pumpkin [29.5 lbs] and Kenny Stevens the marrow [101 lbs] .

The weather on the Sunday was again glorious for the race from the Square down Pitt Hill to the playing field. Stuart Neale stormed home from an entry of over 20 pumpkins, and the rounders match [over 40's v under 40's] was a draw. Approximately £150 [including a generous donation from the W. Feelin' Hot! Hot! Hot!

Yes, it's been that time of year again! When demure village maidens tear off their clothes and cover themselves with feathers [and very little else], and normally staid village gentlemen [I use the term very loosely], put on frilly shirts and become Limbo dancers! You've got it - it's 'Carnival' time! This year's theme was based on Caribbean Carnival - plenty of colour, plenty of fun.

Shamwick - After a wet day, the procession itself was dry and warm and we were soon in the swing of things, even the generator joined in. In fact it got so hot, hot, hot that it caught fire! But that aside, we managed to come home with a cup for the best pub float and a cup for best in class.

Combe - Unfortunately the signature tune for the float turned from 'feelin' hot, hot, hot' to 'soaking wet, wet, wet' and later 'freezing cold, cold, cold'! Still, one of the amplifiers, not to be outdone by the generator, got so hot, hot, hot that it caught fire. Despite all this, we had a good time and again managed 'Best in Class' and 'Best Overall'.

Barum - Who knows what will happen here, but if you see a float that looks like a Viking funeral coming down the road, it will probably be that our trailer has also decided not to be outdone by the generator!

Gary Songhurst - Berrynarbor Carnival Club

I have since been told by Gary not to mention Barnstaple Carnival!

    Pumpkin Competition
In aid of Children in Need

On Saturday, 15th October we shall be having the Competition for the Best Dressed Pumpkin, starting around 8.00 p.m. in The Globe. If Jim Brooks has got a big one, we'll also have a guess the weight competition!

On Sunday, 16th October the racing pumpkins will have their turn, starting at Bessemer Thatch at 3.00 p.m. Competitors should be warned that there will be random drugs testing. Finally [weather permitting] there will be a rounders match in the field afterwards.

    Show Time with The Globe

Show time with The Globe again,
    Held in our Manor Hall.
    The entertainment wag superb,
And a good time had by all.
The room was full to overflowing,
    We almost missed a seat,
They'll have to expand the walls a bit
For the Globe's next year treat.
The audience came as Guides and Scouts
And little Brownies - a few,
The supper went down very well -
    There were second helpings too!
Our thanks to all who played a part
    You really did Berry proud;
No matter who I speak to
Their praises are many and loud.
    It seems that Berrynarbor
Has more talent than we know,
So hopefully this time next year
We'll have another darn Good Show!

    BERRY GOES TO BROADWAY

After the success of last year's Wartime Night, I was asked, 'How do you follow that?' And I must admit that I was doing some head scratching myself. But this is Berrynarbor, so the answer was simple. You put on a Gang Show, sub-titled 'Berry Goes to Broadway', and off we go again!

This year, like Topsy, it grew - bigger cast, bigger audience, bigger hall.

    Act I

Yet again, the audience joined in, dressing as Scouts, Guides, Brownies and Cubs [there were some knees on show that night that hadn't seen the light of day for years]. The Hall was packed!

After some minor teething troubles, the Hall was soon ringing with songs from 'Gigi', '42nd Street', 'Easter Parade' and many more.

At half-time, and by courtesy of The Globe 'Meals on Feet' Brigade, a camp fire nosh of bangers and mash and beans was served and devoured.

    Act II

The turns in Act II were more of a camp fire nature - Scouts and Guides, with a smattering of cowboys, Mexicans, Mounties, Tin Men, etc. , and as would be expected at a Jamboree, the odd transvestite, were seen taking part.

The evening closed with a super Finale with everybody singing, clapping and stomping to such songs as 'Crest of a Wave' and 'Ging Gang Goolie'.

The whole point of these shows is to bring people together and this it did. It was a show performed by village people for village people to enjoy and like last year it was a sell-out. Even though it took place in a larger room, some people were still unable to get tickets - we hope to rectify this next year.

After a donation to the Manor Hall and expenses, such as hardboard for scenery, etc., was taken out, we managed to raise a total of £178 for the Carnival Float.

    The Cast were as follows:

The Band [and so they should be] were:

    The Backstage Crew consisted of:

Our thanks go to the Management Committee, Watermouth Castle, N.D.D.C., The Lantern Centre and all those who gave paint, costumes, advice, books, etc., and a big THANK YOU to an audience that made our work easy.

We do hope that we haven't missed anyone - if we have, sorry!

Dib, Dib, Dib! See you next year!

    SHOWTIME AGAIN!

Following the success of last year's War Time Night, the Carnival Club and friends will be presenting a GANG SHOW on 11th March at the Manor Hall. Starting at 7.30 p.m., the theme of the show will be Broadway Musicals. The audience are asked to dress up as Boy Scouts, Girl Guides, Cubs, Brownies, etc.

Tickets will shortly be on sale at the Globe and are £l.50, including bangers and mash and beans!

If the Brownies, Cubs, etc., require alcoholic drinks from the bar, they should please bring proof of age!!

Hope to see you all there.

Pumpkins of all shapes and sizes appeared at The Globe to try their luck in the Competition. The Heaviest was entered by John Weaver/Tom Tucker and weighed 55 lbs, with Jim Brooks' 42 lb'der the runner-up. The first prize for the Best Dressed went to Jackie Weaver's 'Jurassic Park Dinosaur' , with Ray Toms' 'Pumpkin Person' made with vegetables 2nd and Olinder Holden's 'Caterpillar' made with small pumpkins 3rd. [Apologies, Olinder, for having credited Phil and Lynne with the competition idea, not you! - Ed.] The Pumpkin race down Pitt Hill the following day was won by Ann Davies with Stuart Neale and Ivan Clark in hot pursuit. The sweepstake was won by Marie Mason and Joan Woods.

Many thanks to Brian and Gill Mountain for organising the Barn Dance which raised £75 to which must be added the monies raised from: the sale of pumpkin plants - £65, Guess the Weight [won by Gary Songhurst] - £19 .70, Sweepstake - £16.50 and anonymous donation - £5.00. This will now be made up to £200 by the Carnival Club and sent to CHILDREN IN NEED. Thanks to all who took part.

Suggestions are now needed for next year's Carnival Float - a bottle of whisky for the winning idea.

    Berrynarbor Community Shelter
    5th March 1943

The evening began in fine style with nearly everyone dressed in uniforms ranging from evacuees to some very high ranking German P.O.W's! Nurses were in attendance [in case of a direct hit] and the Fire Brigade were there with hoses at the ready. The only worrying factor was the number of A.R.P. Wardens, we couldn't help wondering who was on duty. However, as soon as the siren sounded, a reassuring voice was heard to say, "Turn that ....dy light out!" Once in the shelter, the night's entertainment started with the 'bigish' band sound of the Billy Cotton Buds [Messrs. Bridle, Neale and Songhurst], followed by Bud Flanagan and Chesney Allen [Brian Holland and Jack Elliot], who gave a fine rendition of 'Underneath the Arches'. Noel Coward [Richard Lewis] was his usual sartorial self with his very British 'Mad Dogs and Englishmen' after which the audience were treated to the multi-talents of Miss Marlene Dietrich [Heather Levy] , who sang, amid wolf whistles, 'Lillie Marlene' and 'Falling in Love Again' . Mr. Stokes then led everyone in 'Sing-a-long-a-Noel' version of 'Bless 'em All'. The first half ended in right and proper fashion with Miss Vera Lynn [Barbara Woods] singing 'The White Cliffs of Dover' and 'We'll Meet Again' - there wasn't a dry eye in the shelter!

During the break, the NAAFI was opened and liberal helpings of rabbit pie and corned beef hash were enjoyed by all.

There was a foot-tapping guitar playing start to the second half of the festivities with Mr. Nigel Mason's solo version of 'The Continental' and the Berrynarbor Home Guard [Messrs. J.Brooks, H. Bowden, R. Richards, J.Clark and D. Phillips] then took the limelight with 'Who do you think you are kidding Mister Hitler?'. Later In the evening they saved the village from certain disaster by defusing an unexploded bomb, and later still this sterling band were seen marching, at musket point, two German Officers to the bar muttering "Buy us a pint an us'll let ee go". The room was filled with pathos when three London evacuees [Misses Lynne Bridle, Joyce Songhurst and Bet Brooks] and a rather obnoxious local lad [Anne Davies] plucked at everyone's heart strings with a song of woe about life away from home. We're not sure what it was Miss Bridie had hidden in the pocket of her navy blue knickers, but whatever it was, it was very active because she couldn't leave it alone!

Strangers from the Middle East then took the stand in the form of Wilson [Nigel Mason], Keppel [Mark Adams] and the delectable Betty [Tony Lynch) who gave us an insight into the mysteries of the Orient. Miss Shirley Temple [Richard Lewis] was so overcome by the occasion that she was seen in one video to be climbing up the wall!

The entertainment ended with three of our American cousins, Maxi [Marie Mason], Pattie [Olinda Holden] and Laverne [Jenny Holley], the Andrews Sisters, who gave a hearty rendition of 'Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree'. Everyone then joined in the patriotic finale.

Lynne, Phil and Gary would like to thank everyone who took part to make it such a super night and for all the advice, books, memorabilia, etc. But most of all, a very big thank you to Stuart Neale and the audience, who enabled us to make it an outstanding night.

P.S. The Carnival Float is better off by £112, and

P.P.S. If you have any old tins of odd coloured paint, we would appreciate them for the float.

From the enthusiastic comments and tales, the evening was obviously an OUTSTANDING success and lots of thanks to Phil, Lynne and Gary. The following are testament to that success.

"Thanks to Phil, Lynne and Gary for all the hard work they put into organising such a lovely evening at 'The Forty's Night' held at The Globe, Berrynarbor, making it a Night to Remember.'

    Roger & Hilary Stevens
    John & Barbara Wood

"Many thanks to Lynne, Phil, Gary and all the excellent performers at the Forties Night held at The Globe. It was a night that will be remembered and talked about for a long time, as it was so much enjoyed by ourselves and everyone who attended. "

    Pat and Dave
    Watermouth Villas

"Thank you Lynne and Phil for a super evening which must have brought back many nostalgic memories for the old timers and a very good evening for the not-so-old. It was amazing how everyone fell into the spirit of the event and the variety of uniforms, etc. was surprising.

"A thank you, too, for the entertainment - where did all the talent come from?! They were all terrific, as was the non-stop music and the incomparable M.C., which all combined to make a memorable evening.

"Many thanks too to the N.A.A.F.I. ladies and all the unseen helpers who did a wonderful job. With all the talent we have in the village, a STAGE DOOR CANTEEN at a later date??"

    J and BB

P.S. After the rabbit pie, we think the rabbits in the area are going to have a thin time in future ...

    Pumpkin Growing Competition

We are having a pumpkin growing competition, the proceeds of which will go to this year's Children in Need appeal, and will shortly be gelling plants. We shall have a weigh-in for the biggest, but don't worry if you haven't got a big 'one , there will be a best dressed' section as well.

    Wartime - 1940's Evening

We are having a 1940's evening on Friday, 5th March and intend to re-create a wartime night with the skittle alley as an air raid shelter. Those in wartime costume will be given a ration of food from our wartime menu, e.g. rabbit pie, meat and tatty pie, etc.

In the air raid shelter, entertainment will be provided by the "Billy Cottonbuds Band", who will be playing the Big Band sound from Glen Miller, the Andrews Sisters, etc. , and many of the locals will be amusing you with sketches, songs, monologues and dance. Anyone who can contribute to the evening would be welcome [see Gary Songhurst]. Finally, if anyone has oil lamps or wartime memorabilia that will add to the atmosphere, it would be much appreciated. P.S. As we cannot find anyone who has accurate knowledge of the Tariff of the day, drinks will not be at 1940 prices!

    GLOBE GOSSIP

By the time you receive this Newsletter, the Bristol Morris Men should have held their "Sing-a-long" at the Globe on Sunday, 27th May.

The Muddiford and Milltown Morris Men will be dancing outside the Globe on three occasions this summer:

The Men's Institute said 'goodbye' to Sid and Flo at The Globe on Friday, 23rd February. It was a good night, with a little sadness at their departure. Sid and Flo, due to ill health, moved to a smaller, ground floor bungalow in Ilfracombe. Many locals agree that it is a shame that there is no suitable accommodation for them here in Berrynarbor.

Sid and Flo lived in Berrynarbor for a happy, 40 years. Before that they lived at Stowford and Two-Pots. Sid, a "Dr. Barnardo's Boy", came originally from the Isle of Wight. He married Flo, who was born in Fremington, 61 years ago. Their two daughters live locally, along with their grand-children and great grand-children.

We all, in Berrynarbor, miss Sid and Flo. We wish them all the best fur the future and ask them to come and visit us as much as possible, because Berrynarbor just isn't the same without them!!

    GLOBE GOSSIP

Christmas Eve saw lots of villagers at The Globe to sing carols around the tree in the car park, but after one verse of 'Hark the Herald' the heavens opened and the organ and singers retreated inside the pub where the carols continued. Although conditions were cramped, the event was most enjoyable and hopefully next year the weather will be kinder.

We had a lovely lunchtime on Christmas Day, with locals and visitors getting together to wish each other a Merry Christmas.

The Boxing Day Quiz - Mastermind has nothing on us! Magnus Magnusson - eat your heart out! 38 people fought an intellectual battle to find the Brains of Berrynarbor, however a team from Combe Martin won the first prize! Village teams came 2nd and 3rd and if we study our 'trivia' next time we're sure to beat all comers!

The 50's and 60's Dance went with a swing. Two well-known local musicians played for us!! The 4-girl backing group showed great talents, as well as their knickers! By next year they promise they'll learn the dance steps as well. Roger and Hilary won the prestigious Jive Contest and Pat Martin managed to get the most balloons up her jumper. An excellent time was had by all.

New Year Eve saw everyone in fancy dress [or their pyjamas] and with everyone full of the New Year's Eve spirit [and beer], the dancing and singing went on until midnight. Auld Lang Syne was sung to the accompaniment of party poppers and blow outs, the revellers linked arms to wish everyone a Happy New Year, and that is what we wish all our customers for the coming year.

We shall be holding a Valentine's Dance some time in February, so look out for posters in the village giving more information.

May your 'regulars' in turn wish you, Phil and Lynne, a Happy New Year and thank you for all your hospitality.

WELCOME TO CHRISTMAS AT "THE GLOBE"

    AND A PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR

Some brave regulars of The Globe undertook a parachute jump in aid of charity at Eaglescott. The Tyrell Hospital received £745 as a result and the League of Friends wish to thank all those who took part. The intrepid jumpers were: Philip Bowden, David Richards, Sarah Adams, Katie Bridle, Sarah Deal, Elise Fanner, Brian Huxtable, Noel Stokes and Michael Lear. The only injury was to Philip's hand - was he trying to get back into the plane after jumping? That's what we're told!
